✨Experience the magic of Día de los Muertos in Oaxaca from the very beginning, as families prepare their homes to welcome loved ones back.✨
Friday, 30th October
12:00 pm - 7:00 pm
In San Bartolomé Quialana, you’ll be welcomed by an En Vía woman entrepreneur and spend the afternoon in her home, taking part in the preparation of the altar.
As offerings are arranged—flowers, food, candles, and personal objects—you’ll learn about their significance and how these traditions are lived within the household. You will visit the market to gather supplies, and come together to prepare the altar and discuss its importance.
San Bartolomé Quialana is a Zapotec community where many residents speak Zapotec alongside Spanish. The town’s name refers to “black rocks,” linked to the surrounding landscape. Daily life is shaped by a mix of agriculture, small businesses, and artisan activities, with strong community traditions and local forms of organization continuing to play an important role.
Through your visit, you’ll gain insight into both the preparations for Day of the Dead and the everyday context in which these traditions take place.
Our Day of the Dead tours offer an intimate and authentic cultural exchange, centred on one woman, her family, and her community. The experience follows the natural rhythm of the day rather than a fixed itinerary, allowing traditions to unfold as they are lived.
